The Greens Farms Academy boys golf won its first four matches and firing an all-time-low aggregate team score.
Eighth grader Will Lodge (Darien) earned Medalist honors with a 36, followed closely by a 37 from senior Dustin Cook (Westport). Twins Giani and Piero Panariello (Westport) each posted 41s, while senior Charlie Thompson (Southport) shot a 42. Senior Curtis Tauck (Westport) closed out the scoring with a 45.
Three GFA golfers shared the low scores of the day for the Dragons as Lodge, Cook and Piero Panariello each shot a 39. Thompson finished with a 41, while Tauck and Giani Panariello (Westport) both turned in a 46.
GFA had opened the season earlier in the week with a 6.5-2.5 win over South Kent.
Lodge led the way for GFA posting a 37 on the demanding Country Club of Fairfield front nine. Cook followed with a 40 ahead of Thompson's 44.
After having its season opener postponed due to weather, the Dragons hit the road and traveled to St. Luke’s for a 17-8 opening win last week.
Kate Paliotta (Westport) and Steph Wisterich (Wilton) combined to score 10 goals, netting five tallies each. Paliotta also had an assist.
Goalies Kelly Van Hoesen (Greenwich) and Kaitlin Reed (Southport) had four and two saves, respectively.
The Dragons showed how far they’ve come in just one year, despite dropping their season-opener by a 9-6 score to Wilbraham & Monson on Wednesday, April 5. GFA fell to the same team by an 18-4 count a year ago.
Ryan Caione (New Canaan) and Zach Liston (Wilton) scored two goals each for the Dragons while Will Byrne (Darien) and Dave Hoffman (Westport) added single tallies. Ryan Pilkington (Weston) made seven saves for the Dragons.
The next time out, though, GFA put up a notch in the win column. Liston scored five goals and Charlie Benson (Darien) added four more to lead GFA Academy to a 13-8 win over Kingswood-Oxford last Friday. Byrne and Ian Epps (Darien) added two goals. Pilkington made 10 saves in net for GFA.
The boys varsity tennis team kicked off the season with a 4-3 win over St. Luke’s at GFA on Friday.
The Dragons got a win at No. 2 singles from Connor McDonald (Westport) with a three-set victory after dropping the first set 2-6. GFA’s next win came at No. 1 doubles as senior captain Matt Smith (Purchase, N.Y.) and junior Sean Minson (Darien) played a match where momentum shifted back and forth with GFA prevailing 7-5 in the third set.
Sophomore Jack Wolfsohn (Easton) picked-up the next win at No. 3 singles, pulling out a hard fought 7-5 victory in the third set.
The team’s next victory came at third doubles from the team of junior Jason Garrelick (Wilton) Jack Ramsay (Darien) as they powered their way to a straight sets win securing the match for the Dragons.
After dropping its first two matches of the week, the Dragons girls tennis team rebounded to post a 7-2 win over Loomis Chafee on Saturday.
In doubles action, Wagner and Boyle joined forces to win while Wolfe and Flicker posted a victory, as well.
That match was played a day after the Dragons dropped a heart-breaking 4-3 decision to St. Luke’s.
The match of the day against the Storm was third singles where Boyle lost the first set but stormed back to win the second, then totally dominated her hard-hitting opponent in the third set super breaker, winning 10-2.
Wolfe at first singles and Wagner at two were also victorious.
GFA opened the season facing Hotchkiss earlier in the week, falling 6-1. Flicker was the lone Dragon to notch a point by winning her match, 7-6 (7-5), 0-6, (9-7).
