First Presbyterian Church led a group of more than 20 volunteers to Far Rockaway on Saturday, Dec. 8, to help with the cleanup from Hurricane Sandy.

The group included teens and seniors. More than a month after the storm, the area remains in need of considerable assistance.

The Outreach Mission group was led by Elder Scott Beyer, who used Facebook networking to connect with community organizers and arrange the work effort.

The response was overwhelming with many local Rockaway residents and other interested volunteers joining with the church members.

The church congregation supplied tools and safety equipment for all volunteers.

The work was hard and dirty, and consisted of tearing out molding drywall, removing wet insulation, moving appliances and furniture and sweeping out sand that was everywhere.

Overall, more than half a dozen homes were cleared of debris, which filled multiple dump trucks.

The church has committed to continue the outreach effort in coming months.

To join a future outreach mission, contact Beyer at sbeyer@fpcnc.org or Paul Hartley, outreach elder, at phartley@fpcnc.org or call 203-966-0002.
