Seniors will graduate from New Canaan High School on June 23, following unanimous approval Monday night by Board of Education members.

The graduation rain date is June 24, which is also the final day of classes for the 2009-2010 school year at NCHS.

Five school days were canceled due to weather this school year, pushing the last day of school at the high school to from June 17 to June 24. Two cancellations were due to snow days and three cancellations were during the aftermath of the wind and rain storm on March 13 and 14, according to Superintendent David Abbey.

According to Abbey, the board historically schedules graduation, which occurs outside at the high school football stadium, for the second-to-last day of classes before summer vacation.

"Years ago the graduation was held in the auditorium, and that was before it was expanded. The reason [we schedule graduation for the second-to-last day of class] is, what happens if it rains all day?"

The school has held graduation on the rain date for the last two years, Abbey said.
