Republican Will Duff has edged Democrat Raghib Allie-Brennan to win the 2nd district in the state House, which covers Bethel and parts of Danbury, Newtown and Redding.

Duff, a former selectman and head of Bethel’s Republican Party, congratulated his opponent on a well fought race, but said the message was clear that voters wanted change in the state capital. Duff won the seat vacated by Republican Dan Carter.

“I’ve been in many races and never met an opponent that ran as hard as him,” Duff said. “I believe the people of the second agreed with me that some changes need to be made up in Hartford.”

Allie-Brennan, who sits on Bethel’s Inland -Wetlands Commission, campaigned on being able to fight the Democratic Party from within and criticized Gov. Dannel P. Malloy for his handling of the state budget, particularly tax increases.

But Duff argued that he was the more experienced candidate and better prepared to represent the district. He cited his experience both as a businessman and in local politics and called for the state to reduce its workforce through attrition.
