The Dorcas Sewing Circle of the First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan is a group of women who use their hands, yarn and knitting needles to bring comfort to others. The church members began more than 10 years ago by knitting caps for Hats with Hugs, which provided the caps to cancer patients.

Today, Dorcas Sewing Circle makes blankets for babies with AIDS, comfort pillows for Necessities Inc. for mastectomy patients, prayer shawls for the church members and friends of the community and hats for cancer patients.

Some of the organizations that have received the items made by the Dorcas Sewing Circle are Greenwich Hospital; Whittingham Cancer Center of Norwalk; Bread and Roses of Stamford and Necessities Inc. of Ridgefield. The items are also utilized by the clergy, deacons and Stephen ministers of the church. They then give them as gifts to people in need of comfort due to life situations such as illness or loss.

The sewing circle meets the third Wednesday of each month from September through May from 10 a.m. to noon. Membership is open to anyone interested in taking part in sewing or knitting projects and sharing some fellowship. The group purchases its own yarn, so financial contributions are welcome.
