The New Canaan YMCA is accepting applications for its "All Kids are Our Kids" college scholarship.
The deadline is Friday, May 24.
The scholarship was established in 2007 to enable a high school senior to pursue a college education, and an award of $5,000 will be made this year to a deserving recipient.
"The New Canaan YMCA's Annual Support Campaign is central to our mission of community service," said YMCA Executive Director Craig Panzano. "We believe that all members of the community have a shared responsibility for raising healthy kids, providing them with the support and experiences they need to become caring, competent adults. The YMCA's Annual Support Campaign allows us to continue responding to our community's changing needs in truly meaningful ways, and one way we do this is through our annual college scholarship."
The award is granted based on academic potential, as well as work and volunteer experience. Other factors are also considered in the decision, including financial need and the person's embodiment of the YMCA's core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
"The scholarship is especially intended for individuals who have had a long-term relationship with the Y, whether as a program participant, volunteer or employee," said Panzano.
Last year's scholarship was awarded to Rachel Finneson and Mina Shah, both of whom were longtime YMCA program participants.
The application includes a statement of career and educational goals, YMCA affiliations, as well as personal recommendations. All applications will be reviewed by a board-led selection committee, and applicants will be notified of the final decision in June. All applicants must fully complete an application prior to May 24 and be willing to accept their scholarship at a YMCA board meeting or other special event.
