Two New Canaan sisters are facing charges after police broke up an underage drinking party at their 23 Church St. home March 14, according to a police report.

Katherine Ray, 18, was issued a misdemeanor summons for permitting minors to possess alcohol and possession of alcohol by a minor in a private place. Her 17-year-old sister was issued an infraction for possession of alcohol by a minor in a private place.

A neighbor called police at 10 p.m. to report a possible party with underage drinking at the location, according to the report. When police arrived, at least 50 teenagers fled out of the basement door and scattered into the street, police said. However, the officers detained about 20 teens, many of whom were under 18, before turning them over to their parents, according to police.

Inside the house, police found about 160 bottles of unopened beer, as well as several bottles of rum and vodka, police said.

The sisters told police their parents were in Vermont, according to the report.

The 18-year-old said she had invited just a few friends through Snapchat, a smart-phone application that allows users to share self-deleting images, but more than 50 youths showed up at the party with their own liquor, police said.

She was released on a promise to appear in court.
