James French Jr., 42, of 100 Harrison Ave. was arrested on Monday, March 18, on charges of evading responsibility and operating an unregistered vehicle in connection with a hit-and-run accident in December.
On Sunday, Dec. 30, police responded to an accident at Elm and Grove streets where a 22-year-old Stamford woman told them she had expected there to be a stop sign on Elm Street and pulled out, but was struck by an oncoming car, according to the report. After the accident, the other car turned around and drove off, leaving some debris and its grille, police said. Though no one got the car's marker plate number, two eyewitnesses described the car as an older white Subaru.
The woman, who complained of pain in her arm, later found she had a broken wrist, police said.
Police said they tracked down French by searching for white Subarus in a state database of vehicles, and found one in New Canaan. Officers visited the residence listed for the car to see the condition of the vehicle, a 1994 Subaru, and talk to the owner.
French, who turned himself in to police, posted a $250 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, April 1.
