"Purim In Israel" will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, March 16, at the New Canaan Nature Center, 144 Oenoke Ridge.

Following the Purim tradition of masquerade parties, the Chabad New Canaan Jewish Center is inviting the community to participate in the event that will feature Israeli music and food.

Attendees will create their own Havdalah candles and create sand art.

In addition, in keeping with the Purim tradition, attendees are encouraged, but are not required, to wear a costume. A prize will be awarded to every child or adult who comes in a costume.

The Jewish Festival of Purim -- celebrated Saturday and Sunday, March 15 and 16 -- is considered the happiest day on the Jewish calendar. Purim commemorates the deliverance of the Jewish people in the ancient Persian Empire from destruction in the wake of a plot by Haman, a story recorded in the biblical Book of Esther.
