Mario J. Pizighelli III, 50, 29 Botsford Hill Road, Newtown, was arrested June 10 on a charge of first-degree larceny for the theft of a $40,000 diamond, New Canaan police said.

According to police, Pizighelli was working with Stark Carpet at a Weed Street home and is accused of prying a 2.15-carat diamond from its setting. Pizighelli was cleaning carpets in the home from 8 to 8:40 a.m. on May 5, police said.

The 40-year-old owner told police she takes her engagement ring and wedding band off when she goes to bed at night. The woman discovered the diamond stolen after Pizighelli left, according to police.

Police were able to establish probable cause through their investigation and applied for an arrest warrant for Pizighelli, police said.

He posted $75,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court June 19.

The diamond has yet to be recovered, police said.
