New Canaan police are investigating an attempted burglary at a commercial office downtown, following a report of substantial damage to the back door Tuesday morning, Sept. 9.

Police were dispatched to 191 Elm St. after an employee at Laverack Capital Partners called to report that the person who delivers oil at the building noticed signs of an attempted forced entry to a steel door in the rear of the office, according to police. There was no entry, however, and nothing has been reported missing.

The burglar likely could not open the door because it's made of solid steel and very heavy, police said.

Sgt. Peter Condos said several "surrounding towns have been plagued with commercial burglaries" in recent weeks and that local police are coordinating with other towns on tracking down the perpetrators.

Condos said the timeframe on the incident is "pretty wide," since employees of the business reported last checking that door over a month ago.
