Trapeze artists, jugglers and puppet shows are just a few of the numerous activities planned for the Silvermine Arts Center's fourth annual ArtsFest Saturday, Sept. 20, from 2 to 4 p.m.
The New Canaan-based center, at 1037 Silvermine Road, will showcase "Ruckus: A Cirque Spectacular," as well as offer three new exhibitions: "Undomesticated," featuring Leslie Giuliani; "Face to Face," Kristina Kuester-Witt; and "The Mischievous Art of Jim Flora," all of which will run from Sept. 20 to Nov. 2.
At 2 p.m., Irwin Chusid, the co-curator of the Flora exhibition and the author of several books on the artist's life and work, will discuss his research and interviews on the ways in which Flora's creative life mirrored changes in technology and marketing. The Flora exhibition will include never-before-seen work and a selection from his commercial and fine art.
At 2 and 3 p.m., two puppet shows written by Ines Zeller Bass and performed by Shoshana Bass and Jana Zeller, will take place simultaneously in separate locations, so that visitors who wish to see both the puppet shows and the circus can do so.
Art activities and demonstrations by members of the Silvermine School of Art faculty will run throughout the event. They will include sculpting with clay, painting, drawing and printmaking. There also will be portrait demonstrations, and participants of any age will be able to draw alongside the teacher.
In addition, the Silvermine Gallery Shop will be expanded to the outdoors with new items, including handmade jewelry, blown glass and ceramics. Gourmet food trucks will be on hand, and performers will be available to answer questions from the audience before the close of the festivities.
The arts center will run shuttles from Silvermine Elementary School's parking lot on Perry Street in Norwalk, just over the New Canaan line. All parking will be at the school, and handicapped parking will be available at the center.
