"The Little Mermaid Jr." has opened the young audience program of the Summer Theatre of New Canaan 2013 Theatre Festival in Waveny.

Performances are scheduled for Friday, July 5, and all Saturday and Sunday through Aug. 11.

It will run in rotation with Dr. Seuss' "The Cat in the Hat," which began June 29, and "Pinkalicious the Musical," beginning July 13.

"The Little Mermaid Jr.," Disney's hour-long version of the Broadway hit, is targeted for child audiences through age 14 and their families.

In a magical kingdom fathoms below, the beautiful young mermaid Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. But first she'll have to defy her father, King Triton, make a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula and convince Prince Eric that she's the girl with the enchanting voice.

Adapted from Disney's 2008 Broadway production, "The Little Mermaid Jr." features the hit songs "Part of Your World," "She's in Love" and the Oscar-winning "Under the Sea."

The show features Sarah Mae Banning (Ariel), Bobby Godas (Prince Eric), Allie Potenza (Ursula), Johann George (Sebastian), Christian Camporin (Flounder), Brian Wicker (King Triton), Danielle Defassio (Scuttle), Kellen Schult (Grimsby/Chef Louis), Chris Balestrie (Flotsam) and Tre Roldan (Jetsam) with Ali Tesluk, Katelyn Miles, Eileen Veghte, Eileen Cannon, Kasey Lee Huizinga, Stephanie Wasser, Daniela Sawyer, Claire Thompson and Zoe Seavey.

The creative team includes Melody Libonati of New Canaan as director, David Turner as music director, Kevin Hanna as set designer, Katie Oxman as choreographer and Orli Nativ as costume designer.

Libonati, of New Canaan, said, "The young family shows we have this season offer an exciting summer theater experience for everyone to enjoy."

All performances, rain or shine, are presented in the state-of-the-art open-air tent at Waveny Park with reserved seating plus stage-side and orchestra box dining as well as open field seating and picnicking.

The tent opens one hour prior to each performance for picnics or dining at reserved tables and the house opens 30 minutes prior to performance for regular ticket holders.

Reserved seating is available online and by phone or can be purchased at the box office one hour prior to curtain on performance days. Tickets start at $18.
