The annual service to honor the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will take place at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at the United Methodist Church, 165 South Ave., New Canaan.

The memorial event is organized by Interfaith of New Canaan and involves local clergy and town officials. Refreshments will be served following the service.

The Rev. Dr. Robert W. Perry, senior pastor of the Union Baptist Church in Stamford, is the keynote speaker.

In addition, Christopher Andrews and Myles Henderson, seniors at New Canaan High School and residents of the ABC House in New Canaan, will offer their own personal testimonies. Music for the service will be provided by Pivot Ministries Men's Choir of Norwalk.

Perry, who has served the church for 40 years, was the first African American to serve on the Stamford Board of Ethics. He has also served as a fire commissioner, the police chaplain and a police commissioner in Stamford. In 1988, he was appointed to the Governor's Task Force on Human Rights. He was the recipient of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Award from the State of Connecticut in 2006 and also the Community Heroes Award in Stamford in 2007.
