The sixth annual All Out for Autism 5k walk/run will take place Friday, Aug. 22.

Presented by New Balance New Canaan, SPED*NET New Canaan and the New Canaan YMCA, all proceeds from the event will benefit programs and events for children with special needs at the New Canaan Y.

The race will begin and end at New Balance, 128 Main St., with the course running through downtown New Canaan. The event will kick off with a 6:15 p.m. a quarter-mile Kids' Fun Run. The 5k course is open to runners and walkers and will begin at 6:30 p.m. Awards and festivities will take place following the race.

The All Out for Autism event was created by New Balance owners Ron and Tina Rosenfeld, who were surprised and inspired by the number of individuals with autism who came into their store.

"The goal of the event is to raise awareness of autism within our community," Ron Rosenfeld said. "One in 88 children are diagnosed with autism, and it is currently the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the United States. We hope that as the event grows each year, so will awareness and support for those individuals with Autism within our community."

More than 550 people participated in the 2013 race and as a result $10,000 was donated to the New Canaan YMCA's special needs department. Because of the funds, the New Canaan YMCA was able to host two dance parties for individuals with special needs and their families, in addition to purchasing special sensory equipment for youth members with special needs to enjoy at the Y and summer camp.

Carolynn Kaufman, director of special needs programming at the Y, said, "We are so grateful for the financial support we received as a result of the success of last year's race. Through these funds, we have been able to provide fun, support, and lasting memories for our community's special needs population. We are thrilled to not only be a sponsor of the race but to once again be the recipient of funds raised this year. This event is an inspiring example of the community coming together to support one another and making a difference right here in our town."

Race registration can be completed online by visiting www.alloutforautism.org or at New Balance New Canaan. The fee is $25 in advance and $30 the day of the race.
