Twenty-three middle school and high school students from First Presbyterian Church arrived at the New Canaan Toy Store Dec. 18 to be Santa's elves for the Salvation Army's gift-giving program.

Chris Kilbane, the owner of the store, offered to keep his store open after hours -- twice, as it turned out, since the first time was canceled due to snow.

In addition to helping the group find the requested toys, he offered a discount, making it possible for even more gifts to be purchased and donated.

According to the Rev. Kathryn "Kibbie" Laird, minister for children, youth and families at First Presbyterian Church, Kilbane's offer and giving spirit allowed the youth groups to honor their commitment to the Salvation Army and to brighten many children's lives during the holiday season.
