NEWTOWN -- Adam Lanza, the suspected shooter in the elementary school mass killing, received tutoring help for his classwork and and "was very hyper in the tutoring sessions" and "not very likeable in a sense," said a person familiar with the instructional work.

Adam Lanza, who was in the 2010 graduating class at Newtown High School, received assistance from Excel Tutoring in Newtown, reportedly for science help. The company offers a variety of tutoring help, including SAT preparation as well as help for troubled students.

Lanza was on the honor roll while a student at Newtown High School.

Neighbors and classmates have described Lanza as a brilliant student who was intensely shy and socially awkward.

An official with Excel declined to comment.
