Bicycles have changed quite a bit since the unwieldy models of the mid-1800s, with front wheels the size of monster truck tires and small, petite back wheels. Lou Kozar, of New Canaan, has added another innovation to the world of bicycles with his new store, Cycles on Call, a repair delivery service that can be scheduled online. Cycles on Call has been operating strictly online since 2009, but now will have a permanent home and workshop at 97 Park St., next to CVS, in a building owned by Bob's Sports. With Cycles on Call, people can go online and schedule a time to have the company pick up a broken bike from the customer's house, fix it and return it within 24 hours. Before he even finished his degree, a friend offered him a job at Segway, the maker of the stand-up vehicles that go when you lean forward and stop when you lean back. Every kid goes through that milestone of learning to ride a bicycle, and it's the first step of autonomy.

The two engineers and five other Metro-North Railroad workers injured in Friday's derailment and collision are considering filing lawsuits contending that subpar track repairs and inspections combined with engineering problems with the state's new fleet of Kawasaki M-8 rail cars might have caused the May 17 accident which injured 76, according to their attorney.

The seven Metro-North workers have hired George Cahill, a New Haven-based railroad law attorney, to pursue damages for injuries suffered when an eastbound commuter train derailed near Bridgeport and was struck by a westbound train heading toward New York.

Cahill said workers have complained the wheels on the new cars might be affixed to the trains too tightly, causing them to fit improperly on the rails, possibly causing the eastbound train's derailment.

Chris Silvera, a union official for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 808 which represents track workers said that track inspectors use a variety of methods to detect flaws and stressed parts of track from visual inspections on foot of by using so-called hi-rail trucks which are revamped highway trucks that can run on rails to assess any flaws.

Of the three renovated fields, one will be made of artificial turf and include modern lighting, dugouts, bleachers, and batting cages along each foul line.

Because it's lit, we're going to be able to use the turf field more.

Funding for the improvements, which are expected to cost $1.8 million, will be privately raised by parents of children involved in New Canaan Baseball, which will also establish a fund for the replacement of the turf in about 10 years.

According to the press release, the last expansion of the library took place in 1979 "when the population of New Canaan was a fraction of what it is today."
